Decimal Day in the U.K. February 15, 1971

On February 19, 2020 Springfield Stamp Club member, Kevin Hans, gave a presentation on Decimal Day in the U.K.  The presentation was an overview of the United Kingdom’s transition from its centuries old Pound, Shilling, Pence currency to a decimal currency which occurred on February 15, 1971 – Decimal Day.  The presentation uses postal history artifacts to explain the old currency, preparations for the transition, and post transition activities.  Implementation was complicated for the Royal Mail as Decimal Day occurred in the middle of a strike by postal employees!   The positive response of Club members to the presentation encouraged Kevin to write an article on Decimal Day that was published in the September 2021 issue of the American Philatelist.
